Bosch dishwasher not draining: what's causing the standing water
Cycle ended, dishes look clean, and there's an inch of gray water sitting in the bottom. It's one of the most common Bosch complaints, and most of the time it's a blockage rather than a dead machine. Here's how to sort out the easy causes from the ones that need a technician.

Standing water at the end of a cycle means the drain path is blocked or the drain pump isn't moving water out. Food debris packed into the filter or jammed against the pump impeller is the single most common cause, according to Bosch's own troubleshooting.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Run a drain cycle first
Close the door, power the unit on, then press and hold the Start button for a few seconds until the display shows a 1. Close the door and let it run. If the cycle was interrupted partway through, this alone empties it.
- Pull and scrub the filter
Power the dishwasher off at the wall. Take out the lower rack, sponge the water out, then twist the cylinder filter counterclockwise and lift it out. The fine mesh screen pops off the coarse filter so you can scrub both with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush. This is the fix in a large share of cases, especially if nobody has cleaned it in a year.
- Check the pump impeller under the filter
With the filter out, pry the plastic pump cover clip out with a spoon handle (never anything sharp) and look at the impeller underneath. Glass chips, a chunk of china, popcorn kernels and hair are the usual jammers. Be careful with your fingers down there, and use a wet vac or turkey baster to clear the last of the water.
- Look at the disposal and the drain hose
If your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, run the disposal with cold water for twenty seconds, then try draining again. Watch for a recently installed disposal. The knockout plug inside the drain nipple gets left in constantly, and the dishwasher can't push water past it.
- Check the air gap and hose for kinks
If you have a chrome air gap on the sink deck, pop the cap and clear any sludge inside. Then look behind the machine for a pinched or kinked drain hose. Water spitting out of the air gap during a cycle points straight at a blockage downstream.

Older Valley homes with original laundry plumbing often have narrow or partly scaled standpipes. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Phoenix-area tap water runs roughly 12 to 20 grains per gallon, which is among the hardest of any major US metro. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and dishwasher spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. Common questions
How do I reset a Bosch dishwasher that won't drain?
Hold the Start (or Reset) button for about three seconds with the door open, then close the door. The machine runs a drain cycle. Cutting power at the breaker for a minute also clears a stuck cycle.
Is a little water in the bottom normal?
A small amount of water in the sump area is normal and keeps the seals from drying out. A visible pool covering the tub floor is not.
Why does it drain fine, then fill back up with dirty water?
That's usually the sink drain or disposal backing up into the dishwasher line, or a drain hose that isn't looped high enough under the counter. The hose needs a high loop or an air gap to stop backflow.
Is this covered under warranty?
Bosch dishwashers carry a limited warranty from the purchase date, and clogs caused by food debris are typically treated as maintenance rather than a defect. A failed pump inside the warranty window is a different story, so check your paperwork before booking a visit.
Can I keep using it with water in the bottom?
Don't. The water turns sour fast and a jammed pump can burn out if it keeps trying to run. Scoop it out and get the drain path cleared.
