GE washer not spinning: what it means and how to fix it

A GE washer that won't spin is almost always blocked by a safety condition rather than a dead motor, usually a lid switch or door lock that no longer tells the control board the machine is shut. After that, the common causes are a broken or slipping drive belt and a clogged drain that leaves water sitting in the tub, because the washer won't spin until it senses the water is gone.

- Redistribute the load and check the level
Front-load and high-efficiency top-load GE washers won't spin a load that's bunched, too small, or piled on one side. Pull it all apart, spread it out evenly, and toss in a couple of similar items if you were washing one heavy piece. Now push on each corner of the cabinet. If it rocks, the feet need leveling, and that alone clears up a lot of no-spin complaints.
- Wait out the pause
GE says pauses of up to about three minutes can happen between agitation and pump-out. The pump-out itself takes a few more minutes. Don't advance the dial by hand, because you can skip the drain portion and never reach spin at all.
- Check for standing water
If there's still water in the tub ten minutes after the cycle ends, you have a drain problem, not a spin motor problem. Clean the pump filter behind the small access cover at the lower front, and keep towels and a shallow pan handy, because water will come out. Socks, coins, hairpins. That's the usual haul.
- Make sure the door or lid is truly latching
On a front-loader, shut the door firmly, then push the dispenser drawer all the way in, since an open drawer blocks spin on some models. On a top-loader, watch the lid lock light. If it keeps flashing or just stays lit, the lid switch is a strong suspect.
- Confirm the outlet has power
Plug a lamp into the same outlet. Check the breaker too. A partial loss of power lets some functions run while the spin never starts.
- Unplug for two minutes
Pull the plug, wait a couple of minutes, plug it back in, then run a spin-only or drain-and-spin cycle. This clears the occasional control glitch. It won't do a thing for a failed switch or a broken belt.
- Spin the drum by hand
Unplug the washer and reach in to turn the drum. If it spins with almost no resistance at all, the drive belt is probably broken or off its pulleys.
