Standing water at the end of a cycle means the drain pump either can't move the water or can't get a clear path to the sink drain. Most of the time something solid is in the way: food debris packed in the filter, a clogged air gap or disposal connection, or a piece of broken glass wedged against the pump impeller.

- Know what normal looks like
A small amount of water in the filter cup, roughly halfway up, is supposed to be there. It keeps the seals from drying out and gets pumped away when the next cycle starts. If that's all you have, nothing is wrong.
- Cut the power, then bail out the tub
Turn off the breaker for the dishwasher before you put your hands in it. Scoop the standing water out with a cup, then finish with a turkey baster or a wet/dry vacuum. You want a dry sump to see anything.
- Pull and clean the filter assembly
Twist out the cylinder filter, lift the flat screen underneath, then wash both under the tap with an old toothbrush. Reach into the sump opening and feel around for anything solid. A packed filter is one of the most common reasons these stop draining.
- Run the garbage disposal and check the air gap
If the dishwasher drains through the disposal, run the disposal for a few seconds to clear the inlet. On a newly installed disposal, the knockout plug inside the inlet may never have been removed, which blocks the drain line completely. Pop the chrome cap off the air gap at the sink and clean out any sludge.
- Look for suds
Hand dish soap in the detergent cup creates foam that a dishwasher pump can't push. If you see bubbles, let them settle, wipe out what you can, then run a rinse with no detergent at all.
- Try a cancel-drain
Close the door and press Cancel or Cancel/Drain. Listen. A steady hum with no water moving points at the pump or a blockage, while a grinding or rubbing noise usually means debris is hitting the impeller.

Older Valley homes with original laundry plumbing often have narrow or partly scaled standpipes. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in July, a control board can see 110°F or more for hours a day. Repair companies here see more board failures than the national averages suggest, especially on machines less than five years old.
Common questions
How do I force my KitchenAid dishwasher to drain?
Press Cancel or Cancel/Drain and shut the door. The machine runs a drain-only routine for a couple of minutes. If the water level doesn't drop, stop repeating it and start looking for a blockage.
Is it normal to have water in the filter area?
Yes, a shallow pool around the filter cup is by design and keeps the seals wet. Water above the filter, or covering the tub floor, is the problem.
Can I fix it by pouring vinegar and baking soda in?
That helps with odor, not with a blockage. A clog made of glass, a label, or packed food waste has to be physically removed.
My dishwasher drains on one cycle but not another. What does that mean?
That pattern often points at the control board rather than a clog, since the water path is the same either way. A technician can confirm it by running the built-in diagnostic and watching whether the pump gets called.
Is this covered under warranty?
