An ice maker that makes no ice is almost always waiting on temperature or water, rarely on a broken ice maker assembly. The single most common cause is a freezer running warmer than about 10 degrees F, which stops the harvest cycle before it ever starts.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Confirm the ice maker is actually switched on
Look for the wire arm in the down position, or the ice maker toggle in the display menu. Also check that Control Lock or Sabbath Mode isn't active, since Sabbath Mode shuts the ice maker off with no error shown. People bump these more often than you'd think.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer for an hour
You want a reading around 0 to 5 degrees F. Above 10 degrees and the ice maker won't call for water at all, so nothing moves and nothing hums. This one check accounts for a large share of no-ice calls.
- Test water flow at the dispenser
Fill a cup and time it. If water dribbles or takes more than about ten seconds for a small glass, pull the filter out and try again. A restricted filter drops pressure below what the fill valve needs, and in this area filters clog sooner than the six month sticker suggests.
- Look for ice in the fill tube
Pull the ice bin and check the small white tube that feeds water into the ice maker at the back of the compartment. A plug of ice in there means the maker cycles but never fills. A hair dryer on a low setting will thaw it, but the ice will come back if the inlet valve is weeping.
- Vacuum the condenser coils
Coils packed with dust and pet hair keep the freezer from holding temperature, which loops you right back to problem one. Pull the base grille or the back panel and clean them with a brush attachment.
- Reset by unplugging for a minute
Unplug the refrigerator, wait a minute, plug it back in. Then give it a couple of hours before you judge the result, because a full first harvest takes time. Don't keep resetting it every ten minutes.

Inlet screens clog fast on Valley water
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. With local water hardness, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix here.

Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and dishwasher spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. How do I reset a KitchenAid ice maker?
