Refrigerator not cooling: LG fridge troubleshooting

An LG refrigerator that runs but won't cool has either a blocked airflow path or a failed part in the cooling circuit, like an evaporator fan, a thermistor, or the compressor system. The simple causes show up most often: Demo Mode left switched on, interior vents blocked by food, or condenser coils packed with dust.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Confirm the temperature settings
LG suggests about 37F in the fresh food section and 0F in the freezer. If the display is locked, hold the lock button for a few seconds before you adjust anything. Then give it several hours to settle.
- Rule out Demo Mode
Demo Mode, also called Display Mode, keeps the lights and the display alive while cooling stays off. Some models flash OFF or a similar indicator. The button combination to exit changes from model to model, so pull out the owner's manual. If cooling kicks back on, nothing is broken.
- Clear the vents and check the doors
Cold air is made in the freezer and pushed into the fridge section, so a stuffed freezer or a cereal box parked against a vent leaves the fresh food side warm. Pull food away from the rear and side vents. Make sure a bottle or a shelf isn't holding a door open, then try the paper test on the gaskets: a sheet closed in the door should drag a little as you pull it out.
- Clean the condenser coils
Unplug it, pull the fridge out, and take off the rear lower panel or the toe grille. Vacuum or brush the dust, lint and pet hair off the coils and around the condenser fan. Coils buried in fuzz are one of the most common reasons a fridge runs nonstop and still won't hold temperature.
- Listen for the fans and feel the compressor
With the door shut, you should hear air moving inside within 30 to 45 seconds. Around back, the condenser fan should be spinning, and the compressor should vibrate and feel warm to the touch. A compressor that vibrates but stays cold points at the refrigerant or sealed system, and that one needs a technician.
- Look at the evaporator coils for frost
If you can get a view behind the rear interior panel, a light even coat of frost is normal. Bone dry means nothing is cooling. A solid block of ice means the defrost system quit and airflow is choked off.

Fine dust from monsoon storms and dry months gets into dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters. Coils and vents in Valley homes usually need cleaning more often than the once-a-year rule of thumb.

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in July, a control board can see 110°F or more for hours a day. Repair companies here see more board failures than the national averages suggest, especially on machines less than five years old.
Common questions
Will unplugging my LG refrigerator reset it?
Pulling the plug for several minutes can clear a stuck control board, and it's worth one try. If cooling returns, keep an eye on it. A fault that comes back is a real part failure, not a glitch.
How long should I wait before deciding it is broken?
After a setting change, a power outage, a big grocery haul, or a fresh install, an LG can take several hours to stabilize, and up to two or three days when it's newly installed. Still warm the next morning with the doors shut? Stop waiting and have it looked at.
Is my LG compressor still under warranty?
Plenty of LG refrigerators carry a longer parts warranty on the linear compressor than on the rest of the machine. Grab your model and serial number and check with LG before you pay for sealed system work. The part may be covered even when the labor isn't.
The freezer is cold but the fridge is warm. Is that the same problem?
Usually not. That split points to airflow between the two compartments, so a technician will look at the evaporator fan, the damper, and ice plugging the air duct long before the compressor.
Can I fix this myself?
Cleaning coils, clearing vents, checking gaskets and shutting off Demo Mode are all fine for a homeowner. Refrigerant lines, the compressor, or a scorched control board should go to a local repair company.
