Samsung refrigerator not making ice: what to check and when to call
The fridge hums along, the water dispenser may still pour, and the ice bucket sits empty. Most of these cases get sorted out at home with a few checks. This page walks through those checks, then explains what a technician tests when none of them work.

No ice on a Samsung almost always means one of two things: the ice maker isn't getting water, or the housing has frozen up and jammed. On French door and side-by-side models the usual culprit is ice buildup inside the ice maker after a warm spell, a door left ajar, or a power interruption.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Make sure the ice maker is actually turned on
Look at the display for an Ice Off or Ice Maker icon. On most models, a lit Ice Off icon means ice making is switched off, and a quick touch or a three second press flips it back. Dual ice maker models use a single button that cycles through the settings. Family Hub owners set it in the Fridge Manager app.
- Confirm the freezer is at 0F or colder
A Samsung ice maker won't produce until the freezer sits at 0F or below. Set it to 0F, drop an independent thermometer inside, then check back after several hours. If the freezer can't hold that temperature, what you have is a cooling problem. Fix that first.
- Pull the ice bucket and look for ice buildup
Take the bucket out and look closely at the tray, the ejector arm, and the small fill tube at the back. A hair dryer on low heat will thaw the housing, so long as you keep it moving and don't melt the plastic, and warm water from a turkey baster handles the fill tube. This clears a large share of Samsung no-ice complaints. It can also come back if the seal or fan problem behind it is still there.
- Check the bucket is seated and holds only ice
A bucket that isn't pushed all the way in can make the ice maker read the bin as full and quit ejecting. Same goes for a scoop or a stray food item sitting in there. On dual cubed ice models, the scoop holder has to face the front of the freezer or it gets in the way of the moving parts.
- Test water flow and the filter
If your model has a dispenser, fill a three quarter cup measure and time it. Under 10 seconds is normal. Slower than that, pull the filter and run the test again, and if flow picks up the filter is clogged and due for replacement. Samsung rates them for about six months, and after a change you'll want to run a few gallons through to purge the air.
- Power cycle, then run the ice maker test
Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker for two minutes. Restore power and write down any error code that pops up. Then press and hold the Test button on the ice maker until it chimes, which can take up to 10 seconds. A freezer ice maker cycle runs roughly 30 seconds, a fridge compartment one about six minutes, and either should finish with water filling the tray.
- Look at the supply line behind the fridge
Pull the refrigerator out and run your hand along the water line, checking for kinks or crimps and any damage. Make sure the home shutoff valve is open all the way. A reverse osmosis system can pull pressure below the 20 psi the inlet valve needs, and that's a plumbing issue rather than an appliance fault.

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. With local water hardness, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix here.

Phoenix-area tap water runs roughly 12 to 20 grains per gallon, which is among the hardest of any major US metro. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and dishwasher spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a local technician will look for.
Garage installs run hot from May through September
A lot of Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler homes keep the washer, dryer or a second refrigerator in the garage, where afternoon temperatures pass 120°F. Control boards, compressors and drain pumps age faster there, and refrigerators can't hold temperature at all when the ambient is above what they're rated for. Tell the repair company the appliance is in the garage so they plan for it.
Common questions
How do I reset a Samsung ice maker?
Take out the ice bucket, find the Test or Reset button on the ice maker, then hold it until you hear a chime. That can take up to 10 seconds. If nothing happens, unplug the fridge or kill its breaker for two minutes, restore power, and try once more. Then give it 24 hours before you judge whether ice is really back.
Why does water dispense fine but I still get no ice?
The inlet valve has two separate ports, so the ice maker side can fail while the dispenser side keeps working normally. A frozen fill tube or a jammed housing looks exactly the same from the outside. Thaw and test before you blame the valve.
Is my Samsung ice maker covered by a repair program?
Certain French door models with known freeze-up trouble have had Samsung service bulletins, software updates, or repair programs tied to particular serial numbers. Enter your model and serial number on Samsung's support site and check before you pay anyone.
Will replacing the water filter fix it?
It can. The ice maker port has a smaller opening than the dispenser, so it starves first when a filter is overdue. Use a Samsung filter, seat it until it clicks, then run a few gallons through the dispenser to clear air out of the line.
How long should I wait for ice after fixing something?
Give it a full 24 hours. The freezer has to get down to 0F and hold it, and a Samsung ice maker only cycles a few times a day. A partly filled bucket the next morning tells you it's working.
