Dishwasher not draining, Whirlpool: what it means and how to fix it
You opened the door after a cycle and found an inch of dirty water sitting in the bottom of the tub. Maybe the pump hums but nothing moves. This page walks through what causes it on Whirlpool dishwashers, what you can safely check yourself, and where a technician has to take over.

Standing water at the end of a cycle means the machine either can't push water out or something is blocking the path to the sink drain. The most common cause by far is a clogged filter or debris sitting in the drain pump, not a failed part.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Run a cancel-drain before you touch anything
On most Whirlpool models, pressing Cancel (or Cancel/Drain) starts a drain-only run that takes about two minutes. Let it finish. If it pumps the water out, the machine may have simply been interrupted mid-cycle, which happens more often than people expect.
- Get the water out by hand
If the drain-only run does nothing, cut power at the breaker or unplug the unit. Scoop out what you can with a cup, then soak up the rest with towels or pull it with a shop vac or turkey baster. Lay towels along the base so nothing runs onto the floor.
- Pull and clean the filter
Take out the lower rack. The filter assembly twists out near the base of the spray arm, usually by hand. Rinse it under the faucet and work the mesh with an old toothbrush, nothing abrasive. This alone fixes a large share of no-drain calls, and in hard water areas the mesh gets a chalky film that traps food fast.
- Look down the pump opening
With the filter out, shine a light into the sump. Broken glass, a fruit sticker, or a popcorn kernel slipping past the strainer is a classic find, and glass gets in there constantly even though it shouldn't. Only reach in with power off, and go slow if you see anything sharp.
- Check the disposal and the knockout plug
Most dishwashers drain through the garbage disposal. Run the disposal to clear it. If the disposal was installed or swapped recently, the solid knockout plug in its dishwasher inlet may still be there, which blocks the drain completely and gets misdiagnosed all the time.
- Check the air gap and the hose loop
If your sink has a small chrome cylinder next to the faucet, pop the cap and clean the debris out of it. The drain hose also needs to rise high inside the cabinet before it drops to the plumbing. A hose that sags low lets sink water back up into the tub.
- Lift the float
Some models have a small plastic float near the front of the tub. A fork or a skewer wedged under it will stop the drain from running. Make sure it's able to move up and down.
What's different in the Phoenix area

Older Valley homes with original laundry plumbing often have narrow or partly scaled standpipes. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Hard water makes this more likely in the Phoenix area
Phoenix-area tap water runs roughly 12 to 20 grains per gallon, which is among the hardest of any major US metro. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and dishwasher spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a local technician will look for.
Common questions about appliance repair in Phoenix
How do I reset a Whirlpool dishwasher that won't drain?
Press Cancel or Cancel/Drain and let the two-minute drain routine run all the way through without opening the door. If that does nothing, cut power at the breaker for a minute and try once more. A reset clears an interrupted cycle, though it won't move a physical clog.
Is a little water in the bottom normal?
A small amount of water in the sump area is normal and keeps the seals from drying out. An inch or more of standing water across the tub floor is not.
Can I run the dishwasher with water sitting in it?
It's better not to. Running a wash cycle on top of a blocked drain can push debris deeper into the pump and turn a cleanable clog into a part replacement.
My dishwasher is only a few months old. Is this covered?
Whirlpool dishwashers carry a manufacturer warranty in the first year, so check your paperwork before paying anyone. Note that clogs caused by food debris are often treated as maintenance rather than a defect.
Why does it drain sometimes but not always?
Intermittent draining usually points to a partial clog that shifts around, or to a drain pump starting to fail. It can also be heat related on certain models, where the pump stalls after a hot cycle and works again once things cool down.
