An ice maker that produces nothing is either getting no water or never getting cold enough to dump a batch. On Whirlpool refrigerators the usual culprit is a frozen fill tube behind the ice maker, with a clogged or badly seated water filter running a close second.

- Confirm the ice maker is actually switched on
Whirlpool itself lists an accidentally switched off ice maker as one of the top reasons for no ice. Depending on your model, that's an on/off setting in the door display, a toggle on the ice maker, or a wire bail arm that has to sit in the down position. Check that no control lock or child lock is active while you're there.
- Check the water filter
Sediment builds up and chokes flow enough to stop ice production, even while the door dispenser still trickles out water. Whirlpool says to swap the filter about every six months, sooner on mineral heavy water. If you just changed it, pull it back out and dispense with the filter removed. Water flowing then means the filter never seated and locked the way it should.
- Look for ice in the fill tube
Take the ice bin out and find the small plastic tube that drips water into the mold, at the back or top of the assembly. A plug of ice in there means water never reaches the mold, and it's the single fault techs pull apart these fridges for most often. A hair dryer on a low setting will melt it. If it locks up again within a few days, the real problem is somewhere else.
- Verify freezer temperature
A mold that never gets cold enough won't release cubes. Set the freezer to 0 F and the fresh food side between 33 and 40 F, then give it several hours to settle. Above roughly 10 F, an ice maker crawls or quits entirely.
- Check the water line behind the fridge
Pull the refrigerator out and look at the supply line for a kink or a crush, which is what happens when the fridge gets shoved tight to the wall. Then confirm the shutoff valve under the sink or in the wall is open all the way.
- Reset the ice maker
Unplug the refrigerator for about a minute, plug it back in, then leave it a couple of hours before you look in the bin. Some heads also have a small reset button. A reset clears stored faults, nothing more, so it won't touch a mechanical or water supply issue.

How do I reset a Whirlpool ice maker?
Unplug the refrigerator for roughly a minute, plug it back in, then give it a couple of hours for the first batch. Some ice makers have a small reset button on the head that you hold down for a few seconds. It clears electronic glitches. It does nothing for a frozen line or a clogged filter.
How long should I wait before deciding it is broken?

My water dispenser works, so why is there no ice?
The dispenser and the ice maker share one valve, then split off into separate outlets and tubing. Water at the door still leaves room for a frozen fill tube, a dead half of the inlet valve, or an ice maker that's simply switched off.

Whirlpool refrigerators come with a limited manufacturer warranty running from the purchase date, and certain sealed system parts stay covered longer. Dig out your paperwork or read the model and serial plate before you pay anyone. If you're close to the cutoff, call Whirlpool and confirm.
Can a new water filter cause no ice?
Yes. A filter that isn't fully locked in, or an off-brand one that doesn't match the housing, can choke flow or block it outright. Pull it and dispense water. If water comes out with the filter removed, reinstall it correctly.
