A Frigidaire freezer that isn't working means the compressor isn't running or the cold air isn't moving, so temperature climbs until the display shows H or HI. The most common causes are a power problem at the outlet or breaker and a failed compressor start relay, the small black part clipped to the side of the compressor.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Confirm the unit actually has power
Push the plug firmly into the outlet, then check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker. Kitchen outlets are often on a GFCI, so press reset on any nearby GFCI receptacle. A surprising share of dead-fridge calls end right here, especially after a storm or a breaker trip.
- Open the door and look for lights
If the interior light comes on, power is reaching the unit and the fault is in the cooling side or the control. No lights at all points back toward the outlet, the wiring, or the main board.
- Put your ear against the back and listen
A steady low hum is the compressor running. Clicking every few minutes, then silence, usually means the start relay is trying to kick the compressor over and failing. Grinding or a burning smell means unplug it now.
- Check the settings and the vents
Frigidaire's suggested settings are 37F for the fresh food side, 0F for the freezer, and a bumped control panel happens more than people expect. Then clear boxes and bags away from the vents inside, since packed shelves block the airflow the fridge depends on.
- Clean the condenser coils
Unplug the unit and vacuum or brush the coils under or behind it. Dust-caked coils are the single most common cooling complaint, and they make the compressor run hot until it just can't keep up. Do this about twice a year, more often with pets.
- Try a full power reset and wait
Unplug the refrigerator for about five minutes, plug it back in, then listen for the compressor. After any fix or setting change, give it a full 24 hours to pull temperature down before you judge it. Write down any error code on the display first, because a reset can clear it.
- Test the door seal with a bill
Close the door on a dollar bill and tug. It should drag a little. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is leaking warm air in, which shows up as a freezer that runs constantly but never gets cold enough.

How do I reset a Frigidaire refrigerator?
