Most LG refrigerators built from 2014 on use a linear compressor, and a fair share of them stop cooling years before they should. The class action over it closed in 2021, so the cash is gone, but LG's 10-year warranty on the compressor part itself is still live for many units. Whether the labor lands on you depends on your purchase date, so check the serial before paying anyone.
Is your model one of them?
The settlement paperwork named specific models, listed below, but the pattern runs wider than the lawsuit. If your model number starts with one of these prefixes and the fridge was built after 2013, assume it has a linear compressor until the rating plate says otherwise.
The model and serial plate is inside the fresh food section, usually on the left wall. Snap a photo of it. Then call LG at 1-800-243-0000 with the serial, or run it through the warranty lookup on lg.com, and ask exactly what compressor coverage is left on your unit. Two minutes on that call can move the priciest part of the job onto LG's tab.

What actually fails
LG's linear compressor moves a piston back and forth instead of spinning a crank. Fewer moving parts on paper. In the field, the weak spot is oil: if the refrigerant charge drifts even a little, oil migrates out of the compressor body and the piston starts running dry. It's a sealed system, so you never see it happen. The fridge just cools a little worse each week until it doesn't.
Failure tends to land between year three and year eight. You may hear clicking from the back as the compressor tries to start, trips on overload, rests, tries again. Some fail the other way and hum around the clock while the box sits at 55 degrees, because the piston still moves but no longer builds pressure. Lights, fans and the display all keep working. That combination, everything alive but nothing cold, is the tell.
The replacement part matters as much as the diagnosis. LG revised this compressor several times, and techs in hot states will tell you the early replacements failed again. The current revision holds up better. If a company quotes a rebuild, ask which compressor part number they install and whether the filter drier gets replaced in the same visit. A swap without a new drier and a proper vacuum pull is a repair you pay for twice.

- Put a thermometer in it
Confirm the outlet works, then set a real thermometer in the fresh food section for two hours. A packed freezer, tired door gaskets or a dead fan can mimic a dying compressor. You want a number. Fifty degrees and slipping tells a different story than 41 and holding.
- Listen at the back for two minutes
Pull the fridge out and stand there. A healthy compressor hums low and steady. Clicking every few minutes with a short buzz between tries means it wants to start and can't. Total silence while the fans run is just as telling. Note what you hear; it shortens the diagnostic call.
- Clean the coils before you blame the compressor
Unplug it and vacuum the condenser coils behind the lower rear panel. Phoenix garage dust mats them over in a season, and a cooked condenser trips the compressor's thermal protection in ways that look exactly like a failure. If cooling comes back a few hours after a cleaning, you just saved the service call.
- Stop there
No gauges, no opening the sealed system. That work needs an EPA license, and cracking it yourself ends whatever coverage you have left. If the box still won't hold temperature, move the food to a cooler and make the call.
What's still covered, as of September 2026
This was a lawsuit settlement, never a CPSC safety recall, so there is no replacement program. Coverage runs from your purchase date, not the manufacture date. Dig up the receipt if you can; without it LG falls back on the serial's manufacture date, which is earlier and costs you months of coverage.

What's different in the Phoenix area
Heat is the local wrinkle. A garage fridge in Mesa or Surprise spends June through September pulling against 110-degree air, which keeps the compressor near its thermal limit for hours at a stretch and shortens the life of a part that already had a short one. Dust does its part too. If your LG lives in the garage, vacuum the coils every spring and expect the compressor to age faster than the same fridge would in a Minneapolis kitchen. When one dies in mid-July the food goes fast, so make the coverage call before the ice finishes melting.
Garage installs run hot from May through September
A lot of Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler homes keep the washer, dryer or a second refrigerator in the garage, where afternoon temperatures pass 120°F. Control boards, compressors and drain pumps age faster there, and refrigerators can't hold temperature at all when the ambient is above what they're rated for. Tell the repair company the appliance is in the garage so they plan for it.

Is there an LG refrigerator compressor recall?
No. There was never a CPSC safety recall. There was a class action, Bentley v. LG Electronics, with final approval in December 2020 and cash claims through February 2021. What survives today is warranty coverage on the compressor part itself, and that depends on your purchase date.
My Kenmore Elite has the same problem. Is it the same compressor?
If the model number starts with 795, Sears sourced the fridge from LG. Same linear compressor, same failure pattern. Coverage is messier because the warranty ran through Sears, so many owners end up paying for the part. An independent tech can fit the current LG replacement either way.
Will LG cover the labor in 2026?
On most units, no. The 10-year coverage is for the compressor part alone, and the settlement's labor window on 2014 to 2017 units has run out. LG customer care does hand out goodwill labor credits case by case, more often for owners who call with a receipt in hand and stay persistent.

Is it worth replacing the compressor, or should I buy a new fridge?
Under ten years with the part covered, repair usually pencils out. Ten plus years, or a second compressor failure, and the money belongs in a new unit. Get the real quote first. Guessing costs more than the diagnostic fee.
Will LG pay for my spoiled food?
The settlement's food-loss payments ended with the 2021 claim deadline, so today it's goodwill only. Photograph what you tossed and ask customer care anyway. Homeowners insurance sometimes covers spoilage from an appliance failure, minus the deductible.
