Frigidaire ice maker repair: check the recall first, then the water path
Before you spend anything on a Frigidaire ice maker, spend two minutes on the recall check. Electrolux has recalled over 750,000 Frigidaire refrigerators across 2022 and 2024 because ice maker parts break off into the bucket, and the fix for those units comes from the manufacturer. Everything else, the slow makers, the silent ones, the hollow cubes, usually traces to the water path, and in Phoenix that path has a hard life.

Two different problems wear the same badge. If plastic pieces are turning up in your ice, seventeen side-by-side models built from 2015 to 2019 are under CPSC recall 24-110 and Electrolux supplies a replacement bucket assembly; check your serial before paying anyone. If the problem is no ice or bad ice, the chain runs filter, inlet valve, fill tube, then the maker itself, and Valley hard water is usually somewhere in that story.

What actually fails
The recall failure is mechanical and blunt: the ice level detector arm and bucket parts turn brittle, crack, and shed plastic into the ice, which is how it earned a choking-hazard recall rather than a quiet service bulletin. The remedy is a redesigned bucket assembly from Electrolux. What the recall does not do is make a lazy ice maker productive again; it solves the plastic, not the plumbing, so plenty of owners need both the recall part and an ordinary repair.
The production failures follow the water. A clogged filter starves the maker first, and hard-water towns burn through filters far faster than the six-month sticker suggests. Next is the inlet valve at the back, where scale jams the little solenoid screen; a valve that hums without flowing fills nothing. Then the fill tube, which frosts shut where it enters the maker and starves the tray drip by drip. Only after those three does suspicion earn its way to the ice maker module itself.
The cube shape is a decent diagnostic on its own. Small or hollow cubes mean low water: filter or valve. No cubes with the arm down and power confirmed means the module or its thermostat. A frozen-over bucket usually means the freezer ran warm at some point and refroze, or on French doors, the old Gen 1 maker doing what it was sued for; that class action settled and closed years ago, so those units are on ordinary repair math now.

- Run the serial through the recall lookup
Plate inside the fresh food section, serial into frigidaire.com's recall page or 888-377-7563. Two recalls are in play, 2022 and 2024, with different model lists. If yours is in, stop using the ice until the replacement bucket assembly arrives, and fish out any ice with plastic flecks in it.
- Date your water filter honestly
If you can't remember changing it, that's your answer, and in Valley water a filter does well to last four months. Swap it, then give the maker a day. A maker that comes back to life after a fresh filter was never broken, just starving.
- Listen for the fill
Ice makers fill on a timer. Stand by the fridge in a quiet moment and wait for the buzz of the valve and the sound of water hitting the tray, or trip a cycle if your manual shows how. A hum with no water is a scaled-up valve. Silence on schedule points at the module.
- Check the fill tube, then hand it over
Look where the small tube enters the ice maker; a visible icicle there means the tube has been freezing shut. You can thaw it, but if it refreezes within weeks something upstream is misbehaving. Valve swaps and module work are quick visits for a tech, and the sealed system behind everything is not homeowner territory at all.

What's different in the Phoenix area
Valley water is the villain of this page. Phoenix-area tap water runs roughly 12 to 20 grains per gallon, which is among the hardest of any major US metro. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and dishwasher spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a local technician will look for.
Inlet screens clog fast on Valley water
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. With local water hardness, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix here.
Garage installs run hot from May through September
A lot of Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler homes keep the washer, dryer or a second refrigerator in the garage, where afternoon temperatures pass 120°F. Will the recall fix my ice maker not making ice?
No. The recall replaces the parts that were shedding plastic, a safety fix. A maker that produces little or nothing has a separate problem, usually the filter, the inlet valve or the fill tube, and that repair happens through a normal service visit whether or not the recall applies to you.
Why does my Frigidaire make no ice when the water dispenser works fine?
The dispenser proves supply reaches the door, so the failure sits on the ice maker's own branch: its fill tube frozen shut, its side of the inlet valve scaled up, or the module itself. That split is genuinely useful; tell the repair company exactly that and the diagnosis is half done.
Why are my ice cubes small and hollow?
