U6 code on a Samsung washer: what it means and what to do

U6 means the control board sensed the drum was off balance during spin and stopped it to protect itself. Nine times out of ten the cause is the load itself: one heavy item on one side, or so little in the drum that the washer can't find a balance point.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Open the lid and spread the load out
Pull the wet items apart and lay them evenly around the drum. A single comforter or a pile of jeans bunched on one side is the usual story. Techs get called out for this more than any other U6 cause, so do it before anything else.
- Add a couple of items if the load is tiny
Two hand towels alone can trigger U6 just as easily as an overloaded drum. The washer needs a reasonable amount of evenly spread weight to spin up. Toss in a few more towels and run spin again.
- Check that the machine sits level
Put a bubble level on top and check side to side, then front to back. If it rocks, turn the adjustable front legs until it sits solid on the floor. A leg that has backed itself most of the way out is common on machines that have walked around during spin.
- Unplug it for five minutes
Pull the plug or flip the breaker, wait, then restore power and start a spin-only cycle. This clears a stuck code after you've fixed the load. It won't fix a mechanical fault, so if U6 comes right back with a balanced load, move on.
- Watch and listen during the spin
Stand there while it ramps up. Violent shaking, banging against the cabinet, or a burning rubber smell all point at hardware rather than laundry. Press down on the tub with the machine off; if it drops unevenly or keeps bouncing, the suspension is worn.

How do I reset a Samsung washer showing U6?
Unplug it or switch off its breaker for about five minutes, then restore power and run a spin-only cycle with a balanced load. That clears the code. If U6 returns on the next spin, the reset isn't your answer.
Is U6 the same as the Ub code?
Yes, they're the same unbalanced load fault shown differently depending on model and display. Some models show dC instead. Check your manual, because on certain Samsung models dC is a door lock error.
Can I still use the washer with a U6 code?
It will wash, then stop before or during spin, leaving clothes dripping wet. You can keep running it while you sort out the cause. Running it with broken suspension parts lets the tub bang the cabinet, which damages more than it saves.
