UR code on a Samsung washer: what it means and how to fix it
Your Samsung washer stops partway through spin, flashes UR, adds water, then tries again while the clock keeps climbing. Sometimes the tub bangs against the cabinet loud enough to hear from another room. UR stands for unbalanced load retry: the washer sensed the load sitting to one side during spin, so it's adding water and trying to even things out before spinning again. A single bunched-up load causes it most of the time, but if UR shows up on load after load, worn tub suspension rods are the usual culprit on Samsung top loaders.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Open the lid and spread the load out
Look for clothes piled against one wall of the drum. Spread them evenly around the sides, and if you're washing one bath mat or a comforter, throw a couple of towels in on the opposite side. This alone clears a large share of UR codes.
- Stop washing single items
Owners get this wrong constantly. One towel, one pair of jeans, or one hoodie won't balance at spin speed. Fill the drum somewhere between half and three quarters full.
- Do the bounce test on the tub
With the lid open and the machine off, put a hand on each side of the inner tub and push straight down hard. A healthy tub settles back with maybe one small bounce. If it keeps bobbing like a trampoline, the suspension rods are worn and that's your answer.
- Check that the washer is level
Set a bubble level on the lid, front to back, then side to side. Machines that were recently moved, or ones sitting on an uneven floor, throw UR with a perfectly good load. Adjust the leveling legs until the machine doesn't rock when you push a corner.
- Pull power for ten minutes
Unplug the washer or flip its breaker, wait about ten minutes, then restore power and run a spin-only cycle with a normal load. This clears the occasional control glitch. If UR comes straight back, the problem is mechanical or a sensor.

Is UR an actual fault, or just a message?
On its own it isn't a fault. Samsung uses Ur to tell you the washer is adding water and retrying the spin because the load is off balance. It becomes a repair issue when it happens on every load, or when the cycle never completes.
How do I reset a Samsung washer showing UR?
Unplug it or switch off its breaker for about ten minutes, then power it back up and run a spin-only cycle. That clears a one-off control hiccup. A code that returns immediately points at the rods or a sensor.
Why does it only happen with bedding and towels?
Heavy, water-holding items soak up water unevenly and shift into one lump at spin speed. Wash them alone with a couple of lighter items for ballast, or use a lower spin speed.
Are suspension rods something I can replace myself?
