LG washer code LE: what it means and how to fix it
Your LG washer fills, washes, then stalls out with LE on the display. Sometimes the drum jiggles a little, gives up, then throws the code. This page explains what LE is telling you, what you can rule out in ten minutes, and what a technician has to open up.

LE is a locked motor error, meaning the control told the drum to spin and the motor didn't turn the way it expected. The most common causes are a badly overloaded tub or a failed rotor position sensor (the hall sensor) on the back of the motor.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Cut the power for five minutes
Unplug the washer, or switch off the breaker, and let it sit five minutes. Some people also hold the power button for about ten seconds while it's unplugged to drain the board. If the fault was a one time hiccup, this clears it.
- Take half the load out
A packed drum of towels, jeans or snowsuits strains the motor enough to trip LE. Pull out half, redistribute what's left, then run a spin. Heavy bedding should go on the bulky or bedding cycle.
- Turn the drum by hand
With the power off, open the door and rotate the drum. It should turn smoothly with no grinding or hard stops. If it binds or clunks, something is caught between the inner and outer tub, and that's a teardown.
- Look for a coin at the drum edge
Check all the way around the front and rear lip of the drum for coins, hairpins, wires from an underwire bra, or a screw. Needle nose pliers or tweezers will get most of them out. This one is worth a careful look. Easy to fix, easy to miss.
- Run an empty spin
Nothing in the drum, spin only cycle. If it still jiggles and codes out with an empty tub, the load isn't the problem and you're looking at a motor side part. That test tells a technician a lot before they even arrive.

How do I reset an LG washer with an LE code?
Unplug it for about five minutes, hold the power button for ten seconds while it's unplugged, then plug it back in and run a spin. That clears a temporary fault. If LE returns on an empty drum, the reset isn't going to hold.
Did I break it by overloading the washer?
Usually no. A heavy load can trip LE on its own, and the code clears once you lighten it. A sensor that has failed was on its way out regardless of how you loaded the machine.

Can I keep using the washer until it's fixed?
It will likely wash but won't spin, which leaves you wringing out soaked clothes. Running repeated failed spin attempts just puts more strain on the motor and control. Better to stop and get it looked at.
