LG washer OE code: what it means and how to fix it

OE means the washer did not empty the water within the time it expected, so it halted the cycle and flagged a drain fault. The most common cause by far is a clogged drain pump filter or a kinked drain hose, not a failed part.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Unplug the washer and look behind it
Pull the plug before touching anything. Check that the drain hose is not bent, twisted, pinched against the wall, or pushed too far down into the standpipe. Straightening a kinked hose resolves a good share of OE codes on its own.
- Drain the water out through the small hose
Open the access panel at the bottom left front of the washer. Unclip the short drain hose, pull the cap off, and let the water run into a shallow pan. There can be a lot of it, so keep towels and a second pan ready.
- Clean the drain pump filter
Once the water is out, twist the round filter counterclockwise and pull it out. Rinse it under warm water and scrub it with a soft brush, then clear debris from the opening and housing before screwing it back in tight. Coins, hair pins, lint, and socks are the usual finds, and this is the single most common fix for OE.
- Listen for the pump during a spin only cycle
Plug the washer back in, select the spin only cycle at high speed, and start it. You should hear a hum from the pump within the first 15 seconds. No hum at all usually points to a failed drain pump or the wiring to it.
- Check for suds overload
If the filter was clean, too much detergent may be the culprit. Heavy suds create air pockets that the pump cannot move, so the washer reads it as a drain failure. Run a tub clean cycle and cut back to about a tablespoon of HE detergent per load.
- Flush the drain hose and standpipe
Disconnect the long drain hose at the back and run water through it to clear any blockage. Also make sure the house standpipe itself is not backing up, which will stop the washer from draining even when the machine is fine.

How do I reset the OE code on my LG washer?
