UE LG washer code: what it means and how to fix it

UE (you may see it as uE or Ub) means the washer sensed an unbalanced load and stopped the spin to protect itself. Nine times out of ten it's laundry bunched on one side of the drum, usually a bulky item like a comforter, or a load that's too big or too small.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Open the door and spread the load out
Pause the cycle and open the door. Pull the laundry apart so it sits evenly around the drum, shut the door, press start. This alone clears the code in most cases, especially when one heavy item has twisted itself up with everything else.
- Check the load size
LG's own guidance is about two thirds full. Too big and the laundry can't tumble at all. Too small, like a lone towel or one pair of jeans, and there's nothing for the drum to balance against, so toss in a couple of similar items.
- Rethink what's in the drum
Pillows, cushions, bath mats, rubber-backed rugs, waterproof anything. All of these soak up water in one spot and throw the drum off. Wash blankets on the duvet or bulky cycle at a medium spin speed rather than a normal cycle.
- Rock the washer to test for level
Push the top corners front to back, then side to side. If it rocks, or you hear it thump during spin, it isn't level. Take a wrench to the leveling feet until all four sit firmly on the floor, then confirm with a bubble level across the front and down the middle of the top.
- Try a power reset
Unplug the washer for a minute or more, plug it back in, and start a rinse and spin. That clears a one-time glitch. It won't touch a real balance problem.
- Watch a spin cycle with a small, even load
Run a rinse and spin with a few towels laid in evenly. If the drum still bangs, walks across the floor, or throws UE again, the fault is inside the machine. The laundry isn't the issue.

Common questions
How do I reset the UE code on an LG washer?
Unplug it for about a minute, plug it back in, then run a rinse and spin. The display clears. But if the real problem is the load or the leveling, UE shows up again on the next spin.
Is UE the same as uE or Ub?
It is. LG uses UE, uE, and Ub for the same unbalanced-load condition, depending on the model and the style of display.
Why does my washer show UE with only one item in it?
One heavy item, say a bath mat or a pair of jeans, has nothing to counterweight it, so the drum can't balance once it gets up to spin speed. Add a similar item or two and restart the spin.
Does UE happen on LG top-load washers too?
Yes, top loaders throw the same code. Same checks apply: spread the load evenly, keep items from wrapping around the agitator, confirm the machine sits level.
Is UE covered under the LG warranty?
